Subway Tile Turned Upside Down!…
and Sideways, and End-Over-End
Whether it’s a kitchen, bathroom or even a foyer, tile can make or break the aesthetic of a room. When selecting the perfect tile, the first things we often consider are the color scheme and design, but more and more frequently the pattern in which the tile is laid is becoming the focal point.
Subway tiles have been steadily growing in popularity, being a top kitchen and bath trend for several years. Inspired by the blend of clean lines and art-deco finishes of the 20th Century New York City subway, what began as a basic 3″ x 6″ tile has become a regular feature in homes across the country.
The tiles embody the perfect balance of industrial-modern, making them great for adding a trendy rustic-chic touch to residential spaces. More and more we’re starting to see an increasing number of builders and developers getting creative with tile types and application. I know what you’re thinking… what the heck does that mean?!
White, standard edge subway tiles give you great bang for your buck and people, and I mean a lot of people, have taken notice. They’re inexpensive to purchase (some places you can find them for as little as 15 cents per tile!), easy to install and can quite literally transform the overall appearance of a room. To set their designs apart, people are laying the tile in unique patterns or choosing tiles with interesting details, like beveled or uneven edges, or even colored tiles.
We’ve been experimenting with different colored tiles and grouts for some time, but recently we’ve been getting a little more adventurous with tile size, layout/application design and even tile location and the feedback has been phenomenal.
